The categories for the 2021 Going Digital Awards in Infrastructure encompass all forms of infrastructure projects and stages – from design, to construction, to operations.

The projects in each category are judged by an independent panel of jurors, using criteria specific to each category.

East 138th Street over the Major Deegan Expressway

Project Description

Originally built in 1938, the existing East 138th Street Bridge is being replaced to eliminate vertical clearance issues and optimize vehicle and pedestrian traffic demands. NYSDOT wanted to use a digital twin as the primary construction document. Located in a heavily congested area, the team needed to create the construction sequencing plan and accommodate existing utilities, compounded by COVID-19. They needed a hybrid modeling approach to generate a digital twin of the complex superstructure and pedestrian components.

Already familiar with Bentley applications, they used OpenBridge Modeler, OpenRoads Designer, and ProSteel to generate an accurate 3D model. iTwin Design Review provided a central platform for over 180 reviewers. Bentley’s integrated technology helped identify and resolve costly issues prior to construction. SYNCHRO 4D facilitated visual, dynamic construction sequencing and traffic control planning for better project coordination. The digital twin is a tool for asset management and bridge inspection.

Nanyanjiang Intercity Railway Front-End Engineering Project of CCCC Third Harbor Engineering Co., Ltd.

Project Description: The Nanyanjiang Intercity Railway project is the first high-speed railway project in China that adopts a large-scale, 40-meter simply supported box girder. CCCC Third Harbor Engineering undertook construction of the 33.9-kilometer line, consisting of five large bridges and one station. They had to manage a multidiscipline team, compounded by existing infrastructure that restricted construction and presented safety risks. When third-party modeling software proved incapable of building the complicated models, they sought to enable integrated modeling and digital management.

They selected ContextCapture to build a reality mesh, helping to make use of the limited construction space. Using OpenBridge Modeler to build more than 10,000 models improved modeling efficiency and accuracy, identifying errors in advance. ProjectWise provided a collaborative management platform, while SYNCHRO 4D facilitated dynamic schedule management, reducing construction by 130 days. Lathams Road Bridge

Project Description: Lathams Road Bridge is a new two-span continuous bridge that is part of an urban brownfield road duplication project to provide connectivity to the Carrum Industrial Estate in Victoria. Engineering consultant Hatch looked for an integrated BIM solution to streamline workflows between the bridge and civil design teams. Prior traditional processes would require hours of manual modeling, so they needed to establish an open connected data environment to facilitate a fully digital project context.

They selected OpenRoads Designer and OpenBridge Modeler, merging their functionality for the first time in the region. Using Bentley’s software, the civil and bridge design teams shared and leveraged real-time data in a coordinated model that they published to iTwin for web-based project reviews. The integrated, 100% digital solution avoided data conversion, providing transparency between the two teams and eliminating the risk of costly design mistakes. Project Description

A high-tech multifunctional medical complex is being developed in Yukki, St. Petersburg to improve the quality, diversity, and accessibility of medical care to residents throughout Russia. The large-scale project presented technical and coordination challenges, compounded by a short three-year timeline. Volgogradnefteproekt wanted to streamline workflows and collaboration among the contractor, designer, and client. The team needed interoperable digital technology to integrate scheduling, facility design, and construction management.

They selected OpenBuildings and ProStructures to generate a 3D model and construction documentation for the entire facility, using ProjectWise to manage all models and approval processes. The solution improved and accelerated decision-making and issue resolution by 20%, allowing them to overcome a 2.5-month delay in the delivery schedule. Arab Engineering Bureau

Al Thumama Stadium

Project Description: Al Thumama Stadium is an aesthetically designed sports venue that will host the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. It will be transformed into a mixed-leisure facility that is integrated into the city infrastructure, promoting social, environmental, and economic development. Arab Engineering Bureau was tasked with the schematic design and construction, facing a short project timeline. They needed a dynamic digital solution to evaluate pedestrian flows and ensure safe and optimal movement throughout the stadium.

They selected LEGION to perform dynamic modeling and real-time pedestrian simulation to justify the area and facility requirements for ingress, egress, halftime, and emergency scenarios. The software optimized design in coordination with architects and planners to ensure all people could safely leave the precinct within 90 minutes after an event, and the seating area within eight minutes in an emergency evacuation scenario. The application facilitated conceptioneering to create an environmentally and socially sustainable space that was engineered to accommodate the venue’s transformation in function and scale.

Project Description: Offering careers in architecture and construction, the Center for Industrial Technological Studies and Services wanted to update their digital teaching tools, as their previous software did not facilitate digital integration of planning, design, and engineering processes. They offered a new digital workshop based on BIM and reality modeling, piloting an environmental initiative to harvest rainwater and reduce campus energy consumption. To ensure efficient and coordinated workflows among the students, they needed integrated modeling technology to manage all phases of the project from design through execution.

They selected ContextCapture and OpenBuildings to generate a digital twin to calculate rainwater harvesting volumes and determine the geometric dimensions of a storage tank. The digital solution served as a teaching tool for integrating lifecycle project procedures while saving significant delivery time, as well as streamlining and coordinating student workflows. Using the digital model, the students determined the viability of harvesting rainwater, expecting to save 50% annually in campus drinking water consumption and 25% to 30% in electricity consumption.

Project Description

Situated in the eastern part of Ezhou, Ezhou Huahu Airport is a new international airport and aviation logistics port, as well as Asia’s first professional cargo airport. The project covers 11.89 square kilometers and requires integration of many process systems, presents complex geological challenges and an extremely tight schedule. With no existing civil aviation BIM standards and 25 million model components, they needed a digital platform capable of supporting large volumes of multisourced data and intelligent lifecycle operations.

They selected Bentley’s BIM applications to develop a 3D airport model, shortening model delivery by 90 days. ProjectWise provided an open, connected data environment, streamlining multidiscipline coordination to save CNY 12 million. Using the Bentley iTwin platform, they established a digital twin, resolving 6,000 issues to reduce costs by CNY 200 million. Bentley’s solution reduced the construction period and promotes smart construction in China’s civil aviation industry.

Application of BIM in the Design of the Renovation Project of Century Avenue in Xixian New Area

Project Description: The Century Avenue renovation project will improve the district’s road network structure and traffic situation, while minimizing the disruption to citizens and businesses. Featuring underground space with subways, cross-street passages, and complex pipe corridors, the large-scale municipal project presented planning and coordination challenges that traditional 2D design could not accommodate. Faced with a short project schedule and multiple design disciplines, the team needed an integrated digital platform to implement collaborative BIM workflows for precise coordination of design and construction.

Project Description: As part of a 10-year investment to create new facilities, the University of Birmingham is transforming its campus by renovating over 200 buildings covering 672 acres. The project requires a digital solution to manage the university’s current and as-built assets that support collaborative, secure delivery, transitioning from conceptualization to operation. With previous project and asset information housed in multiple disparate legacy systems managed by supply chain contractors, they had to establish a connected data environment.

They relied on Bentley’s integrated platform that simplified and accelerated access to real-time information, exponentially improving decision-making. SeaTac Airport International Arrivals Facility

Project Description

The SeaTac Airport International Arrivals Facility is the most complex capital development project in the history of the 69-year-old Seattle airport. The project included constructing a three-story building, an elevated sterile corridor, and the world’s longest pedestrian walkway over an active airport taxi lane. Clark Construction was responsible for the design and construction but faced several challenges, including remotely assembling a 3-million-pound, 320-foot-long center-span pedestrian bridge and then transporting it to the project location.

TBy leveraging BIM and reality modeling technology with Bentley’s SYNCHRO 4D, Clark Construction linked the model with the construction schedule, developing a digital twin to fully visualize the construction sequencing. They used the application to enable precise planning and execution to safely install and fit the iconic walkway within three-eighths of an inch without causing airport disruptions. Project Description: Located along the Woken River in Heilongjiang, the Taoshan Lake ecological, environmental, and water conservancy initiative creates a wetland ecological culture, promoting tourism and leisure. The project area covers over 6.5 million square meters within a narrow, complex construction site. Consultants had to coordinate multiple disciplines amid a short construction period, realizing the imperative need for an integrated and collaborative construction technology solution.

After evaluating several applications, they selected ContextCapture and SYNCHRO 4D. The Bentley solutions helped them to create a 3D model of the construction area, linking the demolition and construction sequences. Project Description: When Zachry Group was selected to construct the Golden Pass LNG Export facility, which has an annual production capacity of 16 million tons, they had to coordinate a globally dispersed team, compounded by COVID-19 restrictions. Prior use of lengthy, error-prone manual work packaging, construction scheduling, and sequencing methods proved ineffective. Given the sheer magnitude of the project, the team needed advanced 4D modeling to visualize construction planning, streamline collaboration, and digitalize project delivery.

Located in the high-altitude alpine region of Tibet, this hydro-complex for a water conservancy initiative is focused on irrigation and power generation, improving urban and rural water supply and the regional water ecological environment. Knowing the importance of subsurface findings, the survey and design team faced challenging terrain and extreme environmental conditions, that traditional survey methods could not accommodate. They explored digital data acquisition and 3D modeling of geological data but found that many software products lacked integration and the ability to maximize data potential.

Geotechnical Aspects of the Moscow Luzhniki Stadium Reconstruction

Project Description: Built in the 1950s, the Moscow Luzhniki Stadium has recently undergone its third and largest reconstruction to become an elite category football stadium designed for use year-round. The project required reconstruction of the six-level, elliptically shaped structure while preserving the heritage façade and stadium roofing. Before beginning construction works, the team needed to address several geotechnical issues, including over-consolidated, Jurassic clay deposits, soil compaction, and existing utilities under the foundation slab.

They selected PLAXIS to model and simulate the impact of reconstruction activities, determining the optimal construction sequence in terms of soil deformation, stress, and stability. Using the 3D model increased reliability of the geotechnical forecast of the base displacements for the new construction and reconstruction of existing buildings and structures, providing opportunities to improve operational efficiencies in the final design. The Dongtaizi Reservoir project is a large-scale water conservancy initiative scheduled as part of China’s 13th Five-year Plan period. Liaoning Water Conservancy and Hydropower Survey and Design Research Institute is the engineering, survey, and design unit and faced technical, geological, and coordination challenges. They realized that traditional design methods were insufficient and that they needed an integrated 3D BIM approach to accommodate the geology, excavation, and dam design.

The team used ProjectWise as the collaborative design management platform, providing a connected data environment for the multiple disciplines. OpenBuildings and OpenRoads facilitated 3D modeling and visualization that helped resolve difficulties designing the ecological fishway and complex concrete dam structure. Project Description: To transform Hanam into a smart city, Korea Land and Housing Corporation and BasisSoft were retained to review the original 2D design and determine a 3D BIM approach. They faced challenges with incomplete design materials, a tight timeline, and modeling the almost 6.5-million-square-meter project area. Previous modeling applications lacked necessary design features and classification systems. They realized that they needed comprehensive, integrated BIM technology to digitalize the design process and create a basic set of data for development of the intelligent city.

They selected ContextCapture to generate a 3D geological model and OpenRoads to accommodate the large BIM data set, create road, river, and sewerage models, calculate earthworks, and review drainage options. Longwood Garden Overflow Parking

They realized that their previous civil design software would take too long to provide grading and cost estimates to the client. Converter-Based Continuous Casting Project of Jinnan Steel Phase II Quwo Base Capacity Reduction & Replacement Project

Project Description

Jinnan Steel Group invested in the Quwo Group (a merger of two steel production plants) to optimize the plant’s industrial layout and achieve higher production quality, efficiency, and sustainability. As the general contractor, WISDRI faced technical and coordination challenges, compounded by limited space and a tight schedule amid COVID-19. They sought to streamline workflows and identify risks in advance through collaborative design and construction simulation technology.

They selected ProjectWise and Bentley’s open modeling applications to digitally unify design among 16 different disciplines, reducing ambiguity and improving design quality. By performing collision detection, they eliminated 66 clashes, saving approximately CNY 1.7 million and reducing rework. Through construction simulation in SYNCHRO 4D, they cut construction by over 30 days and saved an additional CNY 3 million. The integrated digital approach minimized the impact of the pandemic and facilitated the development of a green, smart steel plant, promoting sustainable economic growth.

Dow Chemical

Integration of Advanced Work Packaging into Global Project Methodology

Project Description: As an international owner-operator company that executes capital projects across the entire lifecycle, Dow applies advanced work packaging (AWP) best practices on capital projects above USD 10 million. They considered several software packages for AWP and originally used an initial version of ConstructSim successfully on a pilot project.

Wanting to improve processing time and data availability in the field, which required upgraded technology capabilities to streamline workflows and data sharing, they implemented an updated version of ConstructSim across 15 projects throughout the United States and Canada. The software’s new features drastically decreased model processing time and execution of work packages by one-third. Having more frequent current models, project personnel can more efficiently plan two to four weeks ahead of construction works, significantly reducing rework in the field, saving time and money, and reducing safety risks. Bentley’s AWP solution is now ingrained into Dow’s global project methodology and has become part of their normal workflow.

Phase II C5 Plant Digital Twin Application Project of Neusoft Healthcare International Industrial Park

Project Description: The second phase of Neusoft Healthcare International Industrial Park’s production line expansion is a large-scale civil project, featuring three factory buildings and numerous utility systems spanning over 63,000 square meters. SAMI is responsible for 3D digital design and faced a tight schedule with strict demands on design scheme and construction optimization. They realized that previous traditional methods for implementing civil projects were inadequate and that they needed integrated BIM and digital twin technology.

Already familiar with ProjectWise, SAMI established a collaborative management platform to coordinate over 10 disciplines. They created over 600 3D digital models, saving approximately 2,000 hours. They created full-featured digital twins from the 3D models and used SYNCHRO 4D to link the construction schedule to the model, shortening construction by 300 hours. Bentley’s digital twin solution will save over CNY 3 million in construction costs and lay the foundation for building a digital twin factory.

Project Description: CNOOC piloted a project for the FPSO offshore facility in the South China Sea to create a reality mesh and generate a digital twin that integrates indoor and outdoor data. Located in the deep sea, the project presented environmental challenges around collecting data to develop an accurate model and establish an intelligent information management system. Previous traditional engineering methods proved ineffective, making them realize the need for comprehensive, interoperable survey and reality modeling technology.

Project Description: Located in open sea off the Changle shoreline, Zone C of the Changle Offshore Wind Farm consists of 62 wind turbines, with a total installed capacity of 500 megawatts. The project site presented extreme environmental factors and complicated geological conditions. Fujian Yongfu conducted a feasibility study evaluating the structural integrity and cost-effectiveness of using a suction pile foundation and conduit frame for the turbines. They realized that their traditional soil simulation and strength assessment methods were not applicable to these pile structures and would result in a significant cost increase.

They selected PLAXIS and SACS for geotechnical and structural analysis and design, offering an integrated digital environment to build a composite model that resolved a series of technical and engineering issues. Using Bentley applications, they confirmed the feasibility of the foundation/frame solution, reducing costs by 30% compared to a conventional foundation structure, saving more than CNY 400 million. Project Description

The Jiangsu Longteng special steel 60-megawatt project is the world’s first ultra-high-pressure, subcritical gas generator set with the smallest installed capacity. Capital Engineering & Research Corporation undertook design and construction and faced technical and coordination challenges compounded by a short timeline and limited space. To prevent clashes and simultaneously construct the physical factory and its digital twin, they needed to use open modeling applications in a connected data environment.

They used Bentley applications to establish a collaborative design platform, reducing design errors, and perform construction simulation, optimizing construction. Application of BIM Technology in the Lifecycle of Wuqiangxi Hydroelectric Power Station Expansion Project

Project Description: To improve its hydraulic resources, the owner-operator of Wuqiangxi Hydropower Station will add 500 megawatts of installed capacity to its existing 1,200-megawatt capacity. The project presents complicated construction conditions, large engineering quantities, and a complex pipeline, compounded by the challenge of coordinating a multidiscipline team on a tight schedule. PowerChina ZhongNan provided engineering survey, design, and digital construction services. They realized that traditional manual design strategies were insufficient and needed integrated 3D BIM methodologies to achieve lifecycle digital plant management.

Silvertown Tunnel Project

Project Description: The Silvertown Tunnel in East London is part of new river crossings that will ease the strain on existing crossings. The Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) is a GBP multibillion railway enhancement program to double capacity, reduce carbon emissions, and cut journey times on commuter routes between Manchester, Leeds, and York. When completed, the 100-kilometer route upgrade will improve connectivity and provide economic benefits to the North of England. To bring together the large volume of data and disciplines involved, Network Rail tasked Jacobs with implementing a route-wide digital twin.

Realizing paper-based processes and Excel spreadsheets introduced unnecessary risk and inefficiency across the team, Jacobs used the Bentley iTwin platform with ProjectWise, ContextCapture, and other integrated applications. Using the digital twin meant over 1,300 staff could track, contribute, and analyze design data and asset information in real time. Diablo Dam Digital Twin Modeling

After the overtopping of the dam in Oroville, California, Seattle City Light initiated major safety reviews of its six dams, including Diablo Dam on the Skagit River. To improve survey safety and efficiency, as well as minimize risks inspecting the 160-foot-high dam amid a global pandemic, HDR’s team was asked to provide aerial drone services to supplement physical inspections. They wanted to use the captured data to create a digital twin model of the structure.

They selected ContextCapture and the Bentley iTwin platform to create a digital twin, accurate within two centimeters, from over 82 million survey points. The team could merge architecture, engineering, and construction data with artificial intelligence across the lifecycle of the structure, identifying current and future maintenance and repair needs to ensure safety. The digital twin provides a single reference point for the owner to understand the structure and reduces project costs, while increasing surveyor safety and facilitating decision-making.

Deep Convolutional Neural Network on 3D Reality Mesh for Water Tank Crack Detection

Project Description: Regional water corporation Société Wallonne des Eaux owns and operates a 50-meter-high water tower in Juprelle, Belgium, with a storage capacity of 500 cubic meters. Previous surveys revealed damage, so they took ground photos to define the renovation works but missed the most significant damage. To refine their methods and obtain a more insightful assessment of the water tower’s condition they needed to apply photogrammetry, machine learning, and 3D modeling technology.

They selected ContextCapture Insights to process over 3,000 images and generate a digital twin of the tower to visualize the entire structure and assess the damage. Using machine learning on the digital twin, they automated the accurate identification and quantification of the size of the cracks and determined the optimal corrective actions. PT. Hutama Karya is responsible for constructing the Trans Sumatera toll road, spanning 2,800 kilometers across Sumatra Island in Indonesia. The Serbelawan to Pematangsiantar section is a 28-kilometer expressway projected to shorten travel time by 50%. Project Description: To help facilitate commerce between Delhi and Mumbai, India’s government began developing a 1,350-kilometer, eight-lane expressway between the two cities. The highway will cut travel time from 24 hours to 12 hours. Larsen & Toubro is responsible for designing and building a 23.7-kilometer section between Mumbai and Vadodara. Their initial plan rapidly became complex because they had to build around an unstable ravine and design interchange loops and ramps with toll plazas to connect the existing highways.

Larsen & Toubro knew that OpenRoads Designer would help them create a 3D model of the project and determine how to overcome its challenges. The application allowed them to accurately model the undulating land in the ravine, which assisted with cross drainage structure placement. With a total length of 151.8 kilometers and a connecting line of 40 kilometers, the megaproject features complicated topography and geology, with over 80% of the roadway length consisting of bridges and tunnels. Contractor Sichuan Highway Planning, Survey, Design and Research Institute faced engineering, coordination, and technical challenges that traditional design and construction methods could not accommodate.

Project Description

The Pavilion at Penn Medicine is a 16-story, state-of-the art hospital with a subterranean parking garage and a 1.25-million-square-foot high-rise building with four pedestrian sky bridges. HDR provided structural design services and faced engineering and coordination challenges when ensuring the structural integrity of the irregularly shaped building on a narrow, urban site. To design and analyze the complex steel and concrete connections and supports on a short timeline while accommodating a large project team, they needed integrated structural modeling software.

Project Description: Rosewood is an iconic, mixed-use, luxury development project in the commercial area of the Marina District in Lusail, Doha. It is comprised of two main towers linked at the base by a three-level podium, reaching a built-up area of 152,684 square meters. The organic architectural concept portrays an impression of two coral structures, presenting structural challenges that include designing a cantilever slab system on four corners amid a tight project budget. To ensure the structural integrity while meeting the architectural requirements, Arab Engineering Bureau needed comprehensive, customizable structural design technology.

Project Description: The broad-gauge 125-kilometer railway link between Rishikeh and Karnaprayag is Uttarakhand’s first major railway infrastructure development to facilitate better mobility and connectivity. Louis Berger was awarded the design and project management contract for the bridges along a 14.263-kilometer span, including a record 125-meter bridge span crossing the River Ganges in a highly seismic zone near faults in the Himalayan region. They faced engineering and coordination challenges among the dispersed, interdisciplinary team to ensure the structural integrity and safety of the long-span bridge.

Project Description

When PowerChina Hubei Electric Engineering was hired as the engineering, procurement, and construction contractor to deliver an 80-megawatt ground-based photovoltaic power station, they faced several challenges, including a short 10-month schedule with a requirement to realize lifecycle digital twin application. They originally used third-party design software but quickly realized that it was inefficient and that they needed integrated dynamic modeling technology.

PowerChina Hubei selected OpenBuildings Designer and OpenRoads for 3D modeling, as well as ProjectWise for collaborative design management. With Bentley, they developed photovoltaic design software for mountainous photovoltaic power projects. The solution optimized the design scheme, reducing land occupation and avoiding 40 potential rework scenarios to save more than CNY 800,000. Integrating SYNCHRO 4D accelerated construction by approximately 30 days. They used the Bentley iTwin platform to automatically generate digital twin models, avoiding approximately CNY 1 million in costs had the digital twins been developed at the operation stage.

Project Description: London Power Tunnels 2 (LPT2) will help replace and improve the London power network by constructing 3-meter-diameter tunnels stretching 32.5 kilometers at depths of 10 meters to 63 meters. After previously using traditional transactional methods, they wanted a collaborative digital approach. They hired Mott MacDonald to integrate the digital approach with existing processes and infrastructure. However, Mott MacDonald required a connected data environment.

They selected ProjectWise as the collaborative platform and single source of truth for all engineering data. Using Bentley’s software enabled six companies to work within the same production environment with the client and exchange information within minutes. Mott MacDonald used the solution to eliminate up to four hours of work transferring data packages, streamline workflows, and provide instant visibility into work progress, as well as data consistency. SYNCHRO Pro’s 4D modeling helped assess construction and identify potential safety issues. The digital strategy lays the foundation to leverage digital DNA for asset operations and maintenance.

With over 9,000 active, maintainable assets and various changes in the manufacturing processes, environmental requirements, and management philosophies, manual, paper-based methods for gathering asset data were insufficient. Therefore, they needed to establish a digital asset management and reliability program to develop appropriate care plans.

Leveraging the capabilities of AssetWise, they identified highly critical assets, monitored failure modes, and created a consistent framework for asset maintenance within a single digital environment. The solution reduced the timeframe for asset data collection from days to minutes and provides automated notification of asset abnormalities so that immediate corrective action plans can be implemented. Contingency Plan to Ensure Supply in the Event of Drought (Joinville-Santa Catarina)

Project Description

The city of Joinville experienced their worst water crisis in 30 years. Responsible for supplying water and sanitation services to approximately 600,000 residents in the municipality, CAJ-Joinville Water Company initiated a project to develop a contingency plan to maintain water supply during worsening drought conditions. They evaluated three alternatives in the preliminary study. However, their initial solution yielded insufficient flow transfer, water shortages at the weakest points in the supply system, and a reduction in water transport efficiency. As a result, they needed to implement a more comprehensive study of the municipality’s entire network.

CAJ-Joinville Water Company used OpenFlows WaterGEMS to create a digital twin of the distribution system, modeling 285 kilometers of network. Using the hydraulic model to simulate a new contingency plan, they determined an optimal solution that guaranteed supply in the event of severe drought, while saving approximately BRL 4.5 million compared to their original proposal. The Bentley-based scenario improves flow efficiency, reduces pumping costs, and cuts energy consumption by 574 megawatts per year.

Project Description: The Mirzapur area is spread over 4,525 square kilometers, and water is consumed through individual and public hand pumps. The Leduki Village water supply scheme proposes a piped water supply system to ensure equal distribution of treated water to all 128 villages. The project presented topography challenges, and traditional technology applications were unable to provide accurate visualization and network planning. Therefore, the project team needed comprehensive hydraulic modeling technology to determine an optimal network alignment, plan district metered areas, ensure equipment safety, and provide digital deliverables to the client.

They selected OpenFlows WaterGEMS to model and visualize the project location and new piping network. The software helped analyze 125 kilometers of pumping main, optimizing the design scheme and saving costs on electricity, machinery, and the operating and maintenance costs associated with pumping equipment. STAAD facilitated structural design of the elevated service reservoir and water treatment plant. Project Description: Maynilad Water Services operates 67 active pump-fed areas with 1.08 million water service connections in the West Zone of metro Manila. To ensure cost-effective, efficient pumping operations, they continually manage the pumping stations and inline boosters. However, their manual processes using disparate databases often resulted in high nonrevenue water due to excessive pressure. They sought an integrated digital solution to optimize pumping operations.

They selected OpenFlows WaterGEMS for hydraulic modeling and data analytics, digitalizing their pump operation optimization process, and chose a priority facility to pilot their process. Using Bentley’s interoperable, open application simplified data integration, enabling them to establish an integrated digital twin of the facility network. Based on the model, they determined the pumping inefficiencies and implemented corrective maintenance, resulting in a projected plant power reduction of 13% and saving USD 4,000 annually. The results promote using digital twins to optimize all 67 pumping facilities, greatly reducing total energy consumption, costs, and their carbon footprint.
