Dublin Port Berths 52 and 53: Improving marine construction with 4D planning

Location

Dublin, Ireland

Bentley software used

Bentley LumenRT, SYNCHRO

Project summary

The Dublin Port Development at Berths 52 & 53 is expanding critical marine infrastructure at a live operational port that handles approximately EUR 165 billion in annual trade and 15,000 vessel movements each year. The project is a key component of Dublin Port Company’s Masterplan 2040, designed to accommodate next-generation Ro-Ro vessels. Wills Bros is delivering the work across simultaneous marine and landside fronts while managing active vessel traffic, tight access, and strict environmental constraints within the Dublin Bay UNESCO biosphere.

Using SYNCHRO and Bentley LumenRT for visualization, Wills Bros linked program logic to a 3D model to simulate sequencing, marine logistics, and plant movement before execution. This approach resulted in zero major clashes with operational vessel traffic and improved marine piling productivity by 55%, increasing installation rates from 2.5 to 3.86 piles per week without additional labor or plant. The digital workflow was fundamental to ensuring program certainty and safety in a highly constrained live-port environment.
