As Italy advances railway electrification through renewable energy, Fs Engineering S.p.A. is designing photovoltaic plants for railway traction across existing railway areas, traction substations, and nearby land throughout the country. Coordinating numerous sites introduced significant complexity, as each location presented distinct environmental, archaeological, authorization, and hydraulic constraints. Fragmented design files, spreadsheets, and disconnected tools made models harder to align, revisions more difficult to control, and decisions less transparent. Fs Engineering developed technical and economic feasibility studies and detailed designs while managing information processes and coordinating specialist disciplines across the program.
Using ProjectWise for document control and revision workflows and iTwin to aggregate multidiscipline models with updated site data, the team established a consistent, traceable foundation for design across the portfolio. The program reports 15,000 work hours saved out of 150,000 and an estimated feasibility design reduction from 180 consecutive calendar days to 120. The completed Arezzo, Padua, Saline Joniche, and Foggia sites required no construction-stage design changes.
