Project summary

To address damage to substations caused by ongoing extreme meteorological conditions throughout Henan Province, PowerChina Henan conducted a flood and waterlogging disaster risk survey for 500-kilovolt substations in the area. The project aims to improve flood control efforts and advance targeted flood prevention strategies for substations by leveraging digital solutions for flood simulation modeling, real-time monitoring, and early warning systems. Faced with unfamiliar fields, multiple professional disciplines, and multisourced data, PowerChina needed an integrated technology solution.

PowerChina Henan leveraged Cesium, Bentley iTwin Capture, and open substation and hydraulic modeling applications to integrate captured images and terrain data, conduct flood and waterlogging simulations, and create substation 3D BIM models for users to visualize the dynamic flood situations. Integrating Internet of Things devices, they developed a substation waterlogging disaster monitoring and early warning platform that improved quality and efficiencies by more than 60% and saves over 30% in costs assessing flood disaster impact on each substation inspected.
