Project summary
The Warringah Freeway upgrade aims to improve traffic flow, safety, and connections to future tunnel infrastructure, streamlining transport along one of Australia’s busiest urban freeway corridors. The project presented challenges integrating with numerous existing structures while maintaining network performance in the highly trafficked area. To address these issues among a multidiscipline team, Arcadis sought to deliver a model-based workflow, supporting visual planning and data continuity throughout design, construction, and operations.
Arcadis established a connected digital twin ecosystem using Bentley’s integrated modeling and construction management applications to facilitate rapid iteration, real-time collaboration, and reliable data integration. The digital twin approach identified and resolved over 2,000 design clashes and saved 324,000 work hours. Using Bentley OpenRoads for terrain modeling optimized earthworks, estimated to help avoid 450,000 tons of carbon emissions, while performing 4D construction staging simulations with Bentley SYNCHRO accelerated the project schedule by six to eight weeks. The digital twin provides the foundation for future asset integration.
