Project summary

To improve safety, reduce congestion, and increase rail network capacity in the city, Western Program Alliance (WPA) was engaged to remove 75 level crossings throughout Melbourne by 2025. Faced with integrating new and existing infrastructure while coordinating the design and construction teams, WPA needed to minimize disruption to the traveling public. To keep the project on schedule, WPA wanted to push the boundaries of technology and digital engineering, carefully refining design and construction methodologies for more efficient workflows.WPA used ContextCapture, ProjectWise, and SYNCHRO 4D to implement 4D construction modeling, improving design and engineering coordination. The integrated technology solution helped digitally plan and rehearse construction, helping identify and resolve clashes before work on site, increasing predictability and reducing risk. On this complex project, which includes new stations, track duplication, and train stabling yards, WPA strives to improve existing processes and develop new digital initiatives that evolve and are adopted into standard practice on subsequent projects.
